In 2022, I co-founded a grassroots group of parents that advocated for science-based reading instruction in Goleta’s elementary schools. In part due to our efforts, Goleta Union School District has made major changes to our students’ teaching instruction to align with best practices that are showing results throughout the country. Thanks to our extraordinary teachers, we are already seeing more students in GUSD read proficiently. Through this work, I learned that the most effective school boards have a major impact on student achievement and wellbeing. They are transparent, student focused, and goal-oriented. They set clear goals and metrics for their Districts. If elected to represent Goleta on the Santa Barbara Unified School District Board, I would work to help our Board govern well — to move towards a day where every student in SBUSD is supported, challenged, and thrives in school and in life.
